Obvious spoilers, so don't read this before you play the game =P. The player lives in a house and must survive by sleeping and eating. Food costs money, and to earn money you have to work. You have a job as a test subject in a lab which can have some nasty side effects for the player.  You must go to work to pay for food, but work makes it harder for you to survive due to unintended side effects.
